BAPSA leader attacked by ABVP in JNU

Omprakash Mahato

The Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students’ Association (BAPSA) in Jawaharlal Nehru University has alleged that its president Omprakash Mahato and members were attacked by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists inside the campus on Sunday.

The student leaders were pasting posters of Kanshiram birth anniversary programme, according to a BAPSA statement.

“This kind of activities of ABVP goons have been frequently witnessed in the campus,” it said.

The BAPSA, an active student organisation of Dalits, Adivasis, OBCs and other minority groups in JNU, has appealed JNU community to stand united against ABVP and protect the campus democracy.

Omprakash Mahato, the current president of BAPSA is a research scholar at Center of Political Studies in JNU.

Fraternity Movement JNU has condemned the ABVP attack against BAPSA leader and demanded the arrest of culprits.

“This violence resembles the attack and enforced disappearance of our brother Najeeb Ahmad, in which the Sangh Goons have targetted the hostel rooms of students from the marginalized sections. We demand that the culprits involved in Sangh terror attack on BAPSA activists must be punished immediately,” Fraternity Movement national secretariat member Waseem RS said.

Condemning the ABVP attack, N Sai Balaji, national president of All India Students’ Association (AISA) said that the impunity with which ABVP goons are operating is dangerous.

“JNU VC and Delhi police have been protecting ABVP goons. This impunity has to end,” he said.

Balaji also demanded the arrest of perpetrators.

Students’ Federation of India (SFI) JNU unit committee has demanded that the JNU administration and the Delhi Police take immediate and swift action against the culprits and ensure justice.

“This comes on the back of a similar attack by ABVP against a student of Periyar hostel last month, and several other such incidents by the ABVP in an effort to vitiate the campus atmosphere,” SFI JNU said.

Azad Samaj Party spokesperson Suraj Kumar Bauddh also demanded the arrest of ABVP members.

He also accused Delhi Police of not taking any action against perpetrators.
