The Supreme Court Friday granted bail to human rights defenders Vernon Gonsalves and Arun Ferreira, accused in the Bhima Koregaon case.

The Supreme Court Friday granted bail to human rights defenders Vernon Gonsalves and Arun Ferreira, accused in the Bhima Koregaon case.

Gonsalves and Ferreira were among the 16 human rights activists and academics who had been arrested in the Bhima Koregaon case under the draconian Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.

The duo have been lodged in jail since 2018 and had approached the top court for bail after their bail pleas were denied by the Bombay High Court.

The apex court imposed several conditions on the two men. It directed them not to leave Maharashtra. The duo have been ordered to keep the locations on their mobile phones – only one phone for each of them – to be switched on at all times. Their phones should be paired with that of the NIA officer in charge of their case.
