BSP MP Afzal Ansari sentenced to 4 years in jail, likely to lose MP position

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP Afzal Ansari faces the prospect of losing his Lok Sabha membership after an Uttar Pradesh court Saturday sentenced him to four years imprisonment in an Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act case.

Earlier in the day, the court had passed a verdict and imposed a sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment on Mukhtar Ansari who is currently serving his sentence in Banda district jail. The case was filed under the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act in 2007 at the same Mohammadabad police station in Ghazipur district. Mukhtar is the younger brother of Afzal, who was also convicted later in the day.

“After court held Afzal Ansari guilty in UP Gangsters’ Act case, he was taken into custody. The court sentenced Afzal Ansari to four years imprisonment and also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on him,” said government counsel, Ghazipur, Neeraj Srivastava.

“We would file appeal against the judgment in cases of Afzal Ansari and Mukhtar Ansari,” defence counsel Liyakat Ali said.
