CISF orders probe after officer questions DMK MP Kanimozhi’s nationality

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) sought details from DMK MP Kanimozhi and said it had “ordered an enquiry into the matter” soon after Kanimozhi said a CISF officer asked if she was an Indian when she requested the woman official to speak in Tamil or English.

The Tuticorin MP said a security officer at the airport asked her if she was “an Indian” because she said she didn’t know Hindi and asked the officer to speak in Tamil or English.

She ended her tweet asking, “I would like to know from when being Indian is equal to knowing Hindi.” A hashtag of “Hindi imposition” followed.

The incident reportedly happened at Chennai airport when she arrived there to board a flight to Delhi in the afternoon, news agency PTI reported quoting DMK party sources.

“Warm greetings from @CISFHQrs. We sincerely acknowledge your unpleasant experience. Kindly DM journey details; name of airport, location, date, and time of the incident for appropriate action in the matter,” the CISF tweeted.

“The CISF has ordered an Enquiry into the matter. It is not the policy of CISF to insist upon any particular language,” CISF, a Central Armed Police Force in India added.

The MP thanked CISF for the “immediate response and assurance to take action.”

Kanimozhi’s tweet found support from many including Congress MPs Manickam Tagore and Karti Chidambaram.

Karti Chidambaram wanted the CISF to respond to what he called “outright ridiculous.”
