Election Commission orders widespread bureaucratic transfers, West Bengal DGP removed

Ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) ordered the transfer of Home Secretaries from six states – Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

West Bengal’s Director General of Police, Rajeev Kumar, was also removed.

Alongside the removal of the West Bengal DGP, the Commission also sanctioned the removal of the secretaries of the general administrative departments of Mizoram and Himachal Pradesh, and directed the removal of Brihanmumbai Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, as well as additional commissioners and deputy commissioners.

The Election Commission had previously instructed all state governments to transfer officers involved in election-related duties who have either completed three years in their current position or are posted in their home district. However, Maharashtra failed to comply fully with these directives, particularly concerning certain municipal commissioners, additional commissioners, and deputy municipal commissioners.

Expressing dissatisfaction with this non-compliance, the Commission directed the transfer of BMC officials, as well as additional and deputy commissioners, with a strict deadline for compliance by 6 PM on Monday.

Additionally, the secretaries of the general administrative departments in Mizoram and Himachal Pradesh have also been removed from their positions as part of these widespread bureaucratic changes.
