Himachal Pradesh rainfall: Toll rises to 72

The toll in Himachal Pradesh rose to 72 on Thursday after torrential rain triggered landslides and floods.

One more body found from the debris of a collapsed Shiv temple in Summer Hill area on Thursday. The deceased was identified as Prof P L Sharma, chairman, department of mathematics, Himachal Pradesh University.

According to data from the state disaster management, 1,762 houses suffered complete damage, and 8,952 houses were partially damaged due to the ongoing downpours.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) officials on Wednesday said that the helicopters under the Western Air Command had successfully rescued over 780 individuals from flood-stricken areas in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh within the past 48 hours. This was accomplished through more than 50 sorties conducted for this purpose.

Himachal Pradesh has received 742 millimetres of rainfall in 54 days of monsoon this year against the season’s average of 730 millimetres that it records between June 1 and September 30, an unidentified weather department official told PTI.

All schools and colleges across the state will remain closed till August 19.
