Indian-made eye drops linked to infection in Sri Lanka, CDSCO starts probe

The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has initiated a probe into a complaint raised by the Sri Lankan Ministry of Health alleging that eye drops manufactured in India are linked to eye infection in more than 30 people.

The medicine was manufactured by Gujarat-based Indiana Ophthalmics. This company has been registered with the National Medicines Regulatory Authority of Sri Lanka and supplying the same product for the last seven years.

The patients developed complications after prednisolone eye drops were administered to them following cataract surgery in April, according to The Hindu. After the incident, the eye drops were recalled with “immediate effect” by the Sri Lanka Ministry of Health.

The reputation of India as the global leader in pharmaceuticals has been tarnished as drugs produced in the country have faced scrutiny abroad, particularly concerning the tragic deaths of children in The Gambia and Uzbekistan.

In a recent incident, the authorities in The Gambia discovered a connection between the deaths of 70 children, primarily caused by acute kidney failure, and medicines manufactured by Maiden Pharmaceuticals, an Indian-based company. Additionally, in December of last year, a cough syrup manufactured by Marion Biotech Limited, also based in India, was associated with the deaths of 18 children in Uzbekistan.
