Judge hearing Delhi pogrom UAPA case transferred

Delhi pogrom

The Delhi pogrom conspiracy case, charged under the draconian UAPA, sees a shift as ASJ Amitabh Rawat, who presided over the case, is transferred to the Rouse Avenue court.

Formerly a judge at the Special Delhi Riots court in Shahdara District, Rawat was based at the Karkardooma court.

ASJ Sameer Bajpayee, previously overseeing a CBI court at Rouse Avenue, now takes charge of a special riots court at Karkardooma, inheriting the ongoing riots case from ASJ Rawat.

ASJ Rawat assumes a new role as a special CBI judge at the Rouse Avenue court, with the transfer impacting the trajectory of the riots case.

The development came after a notification was published on Thursday by the Delhi High Court notifying the postings and transfers of judges in the Delhi Higher Judicial Services and Delhi Judicial Services with immediate effect, Live Law reported. A total of 87 and 120 judges have been transferred/posted in the DHJS and DJS respectively.

More than a dozen people, including Muslim activists, students, local politicians, and residents, were arrested in the Delhi pogrom conspiracy case under the UAPA. Most of them remain in jail without bail since 2020.

The accused in the case are Tahir Hussain, Umar Khalid, Khalid Saifi, Isharat Jahan, Meeran Haider, Gulfisha Fatima, Shifa-Ur-Rehman, Asif Iqbal Tanha, Shadab Ahmed, Tasleem Ahmed, Saleem Malik, Mohd. Saleem Khan, Athar Khan, Safoora Zargar, Sharjeel Imam, Faizan Khan and Natasha Narwal.

Earlier, ASJ Vinod Yadav who was hearing the Delhi pogrom cases was also transferred in October 2021.
