Madhya Pradesh govt to make biography of Savarkar compulsory subject for students

Madhya Pradesh will make the biography of Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar a compulsory subject for students, school education minister Inder Singh Parmar announced on Thursday.

Madhya Pradesh will make the biography of Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar a compulsory subject for students, school education minister Inder Singh Parmar announced on Thursday.

“He [Savarkar] had a remarkable contribution in India’s independence… he deserves the respect… Unfortunately, Congress did not teach about the true Indian revolutionaries…,” Parmar said to reporters.

Congress hit out at the BJP-led government in the poll bound state over the decision.

“Teaching Savarkar is an insult to the brave martyrs because Savarkar wrote an apology to the British for being released from jail…,” MP Congress Committee spokesperson KK Mishra said.

“It is unfortunate that they want to include Savarkar. He apologized to the British and including him in the syllabus is an insult to freedom fighters,” Madhya Pradesh Congress MLA Arif Masood said while talking to ANI.

Previously, the Uttar Pradesh government had announced its decision to make Savarkar’s biography a mandatory subject for students in the state board.

However, in a recent development, the newly formed Congress government in Karnataka has removed chapters related to Hindutva ideologues such as Savarkar from the state’s textbooks. These chapters had been introduced by the previous BJP government in Karnataka.
