Maharashtra: 17 killed in crane accident on Samrudhi Highway near Thane

At least 17 workers were killed and three others injured on Tuesday after a crane collapsed on a bridge slab during the construction of the Samruddhi Expressway in Maharashtra’s Thane district, Indian Express reported.

The accident took place near the Sarlambe village in Shahpur tehsil. According to officials, at least six more people are feared trapped under the debris.

The equipment that collapsed was a special-purpose mobile gantry crane used in bridge construction and to install precast box girders in highway construction projects.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said an inquiry has been ordered into the Shahapur accident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakhs from PMNRF to be given to the next of kin of each deceased.
