Narendra Modi talks about Manipur after 79 days of violence

Prime Minster Narendra Modi on Thursday addressed the media outside the Parliament, and made remarks on the sexual assault of Kuki women in Manipur, saying that it ” brings shame to humanity”.

He added, “what has happened to daughters of Manipur can never be forgiven, guilty will not be spared.”

“Today when I have come among you, standing near this temple of democracy, my heart is filled with pain and anger. The incident that has come to light in Manipur is a shameful incident for any civilized society,” he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has addressed the situation in the northeastern state approximately seventy-nine days after the eruption of intense ethnic conflict in Manipur, with around 150 fatalities and tens of thousands of people displaced and currently residing in temporary camps.

His remarks came a day after a harrowing video of two Kuki women being paraded naked in Kangkopi, Manipur by Meiteis went viral. The incident occurred on May 4, and the women have alleged that the police was present at the site of the incident and did nothing to help them.

Many have been demanding that Modi make a public statement on the situation in Manipur over the last 2.5 months and have criticised his silence.
