NIA raids Popular Front leaders in countrywide crackdown, national chairman, 100 leaders held

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday morning raided the premises linked to Popular Front Of India (PFI) in several states.

In a huge crackdown on the Muslim organisation, the anti-terror agency carried out raids in ten states, including Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

More than 100 top PFI leaders and functionaries including its national chairman OMA Salam have been arrested in the countrywide raids.

The NIA said the searches are taking place at the premises of people allegedly involved in terror funding, organising training camps, and radicalising people to join proscribed organisations, reports PTI news agency.

The PFI, in a statement, said the “raids are taking place at the homes of its national, state and local leaders.”

“We strongly protest the fascist regime’s moves to use agencies to silence dissenting voices,” the PFI said.

Popular Front of India (PFI) members staged nationwide protest opposing the NIA, ED conducting raids in several locations against the organisation’s leaders.

This comes days after the anti-terror agency charged four PFI functionaries under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) following carrying out searches at 38 locations in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
