Karnataka: Muslim student assaulted for talking to Hindu girl, 4 held

A Muslim student was assaulted by four Hindu men for talking to a Hindu girl at Puttur in Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district Tuesday. The police have arrested the four assailants.

17-year-old Mohammed Faris was at a juice parlour with his female classmates from the government pre-university college in Puttur. One of the girls was reportedly from a different faith. While Faris talked to his classmates, four Hindu men called him aside and assaulted him, according to Indian Express.

Faris was later treated at a hospital and is said to be stable.

The police arrested the four accused, Dinesh Gowda, Prajwal, Nishanth Kumar, and Pradeep. Gowda is an auto-rickshaw driver in the city, while the others are college students, the newspaper reported.

The case was registered under Sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting with deadly weapon), 365 (kidnapping), 504 (intentional insult), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
