Student leader Atikur Rahman gets bail in ED case too, to walk out of jail after 962 days

Atikur Rahman, former Campus Front of India leader has been granted bail in a case registered by Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday.

Rahman who was arrested while en route to Hathras in October 2020, will now walk free from jail after 962 days once bail formalities are completed.

At the time of his arrest, the 28-year-old PhD scholar was receiving treatment for a congenital heart condition. His family members and Muslim activists and rights groups have been demanding the immediate release of Rahman since his arrest under draconian UAPA.

Two months ago, Rahman was granted bail in the Hathras conspiracy case under draconian UAPA.

Rahman’s family earlier said to Maktoob that he became“partially-paralysed” and “highly disoriented.”

Earlier, following public outrage, Rahman was admitted at Lucknow’s King George’s Medical University (KGMU) hospital.

“As a mother, if your child detaches from you for two hours, you know how anxious you get. My son is in jail, away from me for two years,”Rahman’s mother Rabiyya earlier said.

“Our children always ask me, will our father be as has been before? Will he be able to walk as he did before? Will he be able to play with us as he did before? Will he take us out as he used to do? Tell me, what answer will I give them?” his wife Sanjida had asked.

Responding to the continuing imprisonment of Rahman under the draconian UAPA solely for peacefully exercising his human rights and despite his deteriorating health condition, Amensty International India last year said Rahman’s arbitrary detention must end.

Two years ago, on 5 October 2020, Atikur Rahman along with journalist Siddique Kappan, Jamia Millia Islamia student Masood Ahmad and taxi driver Mohammad Alam was arrested in Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. They were on their way to meet the family of a Dalit woman who was raped and murdered by a group of men from the dominant Hindu caste in Hathras.

The Uttar Pradesh police charged them with ‘sedition’, ‘promoting enmity between groups’, ‘outraging religious feelings’ and ‘criminal conspiracy’ under the Indian Penal Code and ‘raising funds for terrorist act’, and ‘conspiring to commit a terrorist act’ under the UAPA.
