“Tax terrorism has to stop”: Congress gets Rs 1,823 crore tax notice ahead of Lok Sabha polls

The Income Tax Department has served a fresh notice of Rs 1,823 crore to the Congress a day after the Delhi High Court rejected the party’s petitions challenging the tax reassessment proceedings for the financial years 2017-’18 to 2020-’21.

The grand old party which is already facing a funds crunch after Income Tax authorities imposed a penalty of ₹ 200 crore and froze its funds, has accused the BJP of squeezing it financially and of using tax authorities against it ahead of elections.

The party has not received any relief from the High Court in the case and is likely to move the Supreme Court.

“The notices are being sent to cripple us financially. This is tax terrorism, and this is being used to attack the Congress, This has to stop,” Congress’s Jairam Ramesh said in a press conference today.

Ramesh asserted that the Congress’s campaign for the upcoming parliamentary polls will continue and the party will take its guarantees to the people of the country.

“We will not be scared of these notices. We will be more aggressive and fight these polls,” the former Union minister said.

Congress former chief Rahul Gandhi said that when they come to power, they will take strict action against those trying to ‘disintegrate democracy’.

“When the government changes, action will definitely be taken against those who ‘disintegrate democracy’! And such action will be taken that no one will have the courage to do all this again. This is my guarantee,” he said in a post on X.
