Only a few months before Assembly elections in Assam, Chief advisor of Akhil Gogoi led new party Raijor Dal, Dr. Hiren Gohain told reporters that joining hands with All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal will bring no harm to the party.

“Ajmal is not an enemy of the country. He is being presented as an enemy in front of the people and this particular game is played by the saffron party BJP. Opposition parties should consider whether Ajmal is the biggest enemy or the BJP,” Assam’s top literary critic, and social scientist said.

Gohain also said to presser that Ajmal has no conspiratorial intent to harm Assam and claimed that there is a BJP propaganda against Ajmal, a vocal Muslim leader in the state.

“I don’t think there will be any harm in joining hands with him politically in this hour of need,” Gohain said.

Meanwhile, RD officially sent a letter to Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), launched by student organisations All Assam Students Union and Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad, seeking an alliance to form a regional front against BJP and other national parties like the Congress.

Raijor Dal (RD), a regional party formed last year, is the offshoot of the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests that rocked the state in December 2019.

The newly flouted RD was formed by Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti, a farmers’ body led by activist Akhil Gogoi who is in jail since December 2019 for his role in the anti-CAA protests.

In 2016 state polls, Badruddin Ajmal’s AIUDF contested around 76 seats while its allies in Assam – Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Janata Dal (United) – contest 12 seats each.

In December 2020 in Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections Congress contested together with the AIUDF.
