“This is a 70-year-old tradition,” shout Holi-celebrating men while harassing Muslim family in UP; one arrested

One person was arrested and three minors were detained by police in Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor in connection with a viral video that shows a Holi celebrating Hindu men and teenagers harassing a Muslim family.

The video shows a Muslim man and two Muslim women riding a bike, surrounded by a group of teenagers shouting Hindu religious slogans. The teenagers spray water on the women using a pipe despite their protests. The harassment escalates as buckets are employed to douse the women with water, and the teenagers forcefully apply color to the faces of the man and one of the women.

“This is a 70-year-old tradition,” one of the assailants was shouting.

The incident had taken place in the Dhampur police station area.

Soon after the video went viral and many took to social media to condemn the incident, Bijnor police chief Neeraj Kumar Jadaun asked local police to take action.

A case has been registered under several sections, including those related to wrongful restraint, voluntarily causing hurt and assaulting a woman.

Police have arrested one person, identified as Aniruddh, and detained three juveniles in this connection.
