Union minister runs to evade questions on wrestlers’ protest

In a video that has gone viral on social media, Union Minister of State for External Affairs & Culture Meenakshi Lekhi ran away from a reporter who questioned her about the wrestlers’ protest.

Opposition parties and critics of the BJP government have shared the video of the Minister rushing away as the journalist from INews questions, “Why is the Prime Minister silent?”

Lekhi can be heard saying, “Chalo chalo” and hastily moving away from the reporters.

The minister was reportedly attending the inauguration of a toilet complex and water cooler to the public at Hanuman Mandir in New Delhi’s Connaught Place.

Swati Maliwal, the chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women, tweeted that the minister “intoxicated with power,” ran “faster than #UsainBolt“.

Pressure mounts over the Union government’s silence as wrestlers’ protest enter the second month. The United World Wrestling (UWW), the global governing body for wrestling, came out with a strong statement condemning the “treatment and detention of the wrestlers” in India.

“For several months, United World Wrestling has followed with great concern the situation in India where wrestlers are protesting over allegations of abuse and harassment by the President of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI),” the statement said.
