UP: Dalit teenager beaten to death for asking for his Wages, family yet to receive body after two weeks

Eighteen year old Dalit youth was killed in Uttar Pradesh’s Sultanpur, for asking for his wages.

Although the incident took place on 25 August, the deceased’s family has not yet received the body following the postmortem examination, The Wire reported.

Vinay Kumar (18), who had worked for the accused, Digvijay Yadav, for over four days, sought his wages. Instead of paying Kumar, Yadav allegedly attacked him, resulting in his tragic death.

“He [Kumar] was killed because he belonged to the Dalit community,” The Wire quoted Vinay Kumar’s brother, Sher Bahadur as saying.

He added: “Examining his head, I am convinced he was struck with a deadly weapon. The intent was unmistakable, they had no intention of letting him survive.”

Based on Kumar’s father, the FIR was filed at Akhandnagar Police Station. A case has been registered under Section 302 (Murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

Kumar’s family said that he was the youngest among their children, and he had been working odd jobs to support himself. In the days leading up to his tragic passing, he had been diligently earning money to purchase gifts for his sisters on Rakshabandhan.

Kumar’s death has caused anger in his hometown, Daramatur village, in Sultanpur district. People organized a candlelight march to support Kumar’s family and protest against the caste violence. They are asking the government to provide a job to one of Kumar’s family members.
