UP: Muslim man dies in police custody, father alleges murder

22-year-old Altaf who was detained in the case of the elopement of a girl, died in police custody in Uttar Pradesh’s Kasganj district on Tuesday evening.

Althaf’s father Caahat Miyan told Maktoob that he was murdered in custody while cops claimed that he hanged himself in a police station washroom with the drawstring of his jacket hood.

“It is not suicide, it is a police killing. They killed my son,” Miyan said to Maktoob over the phone.

Miyan claimed that he handed over his son to the police at 8 pm on Monday, and he went to the police station to get more details and a copy of the FIR. The father of the deceased told Maktoob that cops in the station misbehaved with him and warned him not to come to the station again.

Miyan only learnt of the death of his son through local reporters at 6 pm on Tuesday.

According to the police version, the cops found him in an unconscious state inside the police station washroom and took him to a community health centre at Ashok Nagar in Kasganj. The police said that Altaf died after 5 to 10 minutes of treatment.

“By the time I reached the station again, my son was taken to a local hospital. Doctors there declared him dead,” the father says.

“My son was innocent, he had no criminal past,” Miyan said. Althaf was not produced before a magistrate on Tuesday, Miyan has alleged.

A police officer confirmed to Maktoob that five police personnel including Kotwali in-charge Virendra Indolia, Senior Sub Inspector Chandresh Gautam, Nadrai Gate Outpost Incharge Vikas Kumar, Head Muharrir Ghanendra Singh and constable Saurabh Solanki have been suspended for negligence on duty after the incident.
