“We will not stop our work, we are not scared,” said Indian Youth Congress chief Srinivas BV, who has been among the most active in social media in responding to COVID-19 related SOS, after being questioned by the Delhi Police today on allegations linked to distribution of coronavirus medicines.
A team of Crime Branch officials reached the headquarters of the IYC and questioned its chief Srinivas BV for 20 minutes.
“Crime Branch officials had come to the youth Congress office regarding a PIL filed in Delhi High Court by 12 people seeking action against hoarding of oxygen and other life-saving drugs. We have shared all the information with them and we have nothing to hide; we will continue with the relief work,” Srinivas told reporters.
“The one who saves is always bigger than the one who destroys,” Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wrote in Hindi in Srinivas’s support with the hashtag #IStandWithIYC.
Srinivas BV has been managing a war room inside the Youth Congress office in New Delhi, which monitors and acts on social media messages and posts asking for help or requests for oxygen and medicines.
In 2020, the young Congress politician set up a network of Youth Congress volunteers under “SOS IYC”.
Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala issued a statement and condemned the police action on the party workers, involved in the relief work.
Congress’s in-charge of Delhi affairs Shaktisinh Gohil also told media that the Delhi Police’s action is being taken to intimidate the party workers when they are engaged in the relief work.
“This is nothing but intimidation of our workers who are helping out those in need at this time of the pandemic. The government thinks that because of our work, their inefficiency is getting exposed,” he added.
Last week, the Delhi High Court had asked Delhi Police to file a status report on a PIL seeking registration of FIRs against leaders of political parties indulging in hoarding and illegally distributing Covid medicines.
Reports say that the Crime Branch of Delhi Police has so far questioned about 10 leaders and businessmen of different parties over the same allegations.
