Won’t support Delhi ordinance, says Congress

The Congress on Sunday declared that it will oppose the Union government’s ordinance on the control of services in Delhi and will resist any attempt by the Union to “sabotage federalism” in the country.

“We are consistently opposing the attempts of the Union government to sabotage federalism. We are consistently opposing the attitude of the Union government to run the opposition states through the governors. Our stand is very clear, we are not going to support the Delhi ordinance,” Congress general secretary KC Venugopal told PTI.

Venugopal added that the party took its decision on Saturday (July 15) at a parliamentary strategy meeting.

“Not only the Delhi ordinance, any attempt to sabotage federalism in the country, to intervene in matters of states through Governors, we are not going to support. Same way, Delhi ordinance also, we are not going to support,” Venugopal said.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP and national spokesperson Raghav Chadha welcomed the Congress’ ‘unequivocal opposition’ to the ordinance and said “this is a positive development.”

After the first Opposition meeting in Patna, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had said that unless the Congress publicly denounced the ordinance it would be “very difficult” for it to be a part of any coalition that includes the grand old party.
