Afreen Perween, wife of Mohammad Nadeem Alam who is under treatment for bullet wounds during police violence against Muslim protesters in Ranchi on 10 June, has filed an interlocutory application (IA) with regard to a Public Interest Litigation in the Jharkhand High Court, stating that the authorities were “hostile” to the victims of police violence.

Amid personal criticisms and trolls on social media of the two Supreme Court judges who made oral comments against former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and her Islamophobic remarks, one of the judges who was part of the Bench has expressed concern over the use of digital and social media for “expressing personalised opinions” against judges.

Referring to Friday’s Supreme Court’s sharp observations on BJP leader Nupur Sharma and her anti-Islam remarks, former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi said the atmosphere in the country has been created by the ruling party.

Hearing a plea filed by BJP leader Nupur Sharma seeking transfer of the FIRs against her to Delhi, the Supreme Court slammed the Hindutva politician for her Islamophobic remarks on the Prophet. Accusing Sharma of “igniting emotions across the country”, the apex court said that she owed the nation an apology.

Nupur Sharma, the controversial Hindutva politician on Saturday skipped summons issued by the Kolkata Police after a complaint was filed against her for the derogatory remarks she made about the prophet Muhammaed last month.

Chanting slogans against the anti-Islam remarks by India’s governing party officials, the United Muslim Front of the Greater Chicagoland area staged a demonstration in front of the Indian Consulate General, in Chicago.
