The Delhi Police on Tuesday booked Jamia Millia Islamia student leaders Meeran Haider, Safoora Zargar and former Jawaharlal Nehru University student leader Umar Khalid under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, or UAPA, in a case related to violence in North East Delhi in February left 36 Muslims dead by Hindu mobs.

Federation of Central Universities Teachers’ Associations (FEDCUTA), Jamia Teachers’ Association (JTA), Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers’ Association (JNUTA) and more than thirty organizations wrote a joint statement on Tuesday demanding the constitutional rights of the two arrested Jamia Millia Islamia student leaders, Safoora Zargar, and Meeran Haider be respected and be released forthwith.
