Ione Belarra, leader of the far-left Podemos, the junior member of Spain’s ruling coalition on Monday urged the government to bring Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu before the International Criminal Court for war crimes.
Belarra currently serves as Minister of Social Rights and 2030 Agenda in Spanish government.
Israel is carrying out a “planned genocide” in the Gaza Strip by leaving hundreds of thousands of people without water and electricity and demanding their evacuation without any security guarantees, stressed Ione Belarra.
She called on EU presidency holder Spain to distance itself from the line taken by the US of unwavering support for Israel and instead seek a solution with countries of the “global south”.
In a statement circulated on social media, the leader of Podemos demanded that humanitarian corridors should be established in the Gaza Strip and that the European Union should stop being “an accomplice of a war criminal such as Netanyahu”.
Belarra on Sunday shared images of her attending a pro-Palestinian rally in Madrid.
“The streets of Madrid were filled with dignity today to call for an end to the planned genocide of the State of Israel against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip,” she wrote on X.
