Gaza: US vetoes UN resolution calling for ‘humanitarian pause’ in war

The US vetoed a draft resolution introduced by Brazil at the UN Security Council Wednesday, calling for a “humanitarian pause” in the war with Washington criticising the text for not mentioning “Israel’s right to defend itself.”

Out of 15 member states of the Council, 12 voted in favour, two abstained, including Russia. But the United States, one of the five permanent members, voted against, which was enough to block its adoption.

The resolution would also have denounced Hamas’ “heinous terrorist attacks” and condemned all violence against civilians.

In addition to calling for a pause in fighting, the text demanded humanitarian corridors in Gaza and a rescinding of Israel’s order for Palestinians to leave northern Gaza.

“The United Nations Security Council, which has become even more ineffective, has once again not fulfilled its responsibility,” Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on social messaging platform X.
