Palestinian journalist, 11 family members killed by Israeli air strike

An Israeli air strike has killed a Palestinian journalist along with several members of his family in southern Gaza.

Mohammad Abu Hattab, a reporter for Palestine TV, was killed by a strike on his home in Khan Younis on Thursday, Wafa news agency reported.

According to CPJ, Abu Hatab will be the 36th journalist to be killed during this conflict: 31 Palestinians, four Israelis, and one Lebanese reporter.

Eleven members of Abu Hatab’s family were killed, including his wife, son and brother.

Following the killing, Hatab’s colleague Salman Al-Bashir removed his protective gear marked PRESS on air stating, “We can’t take it anymore, we are exhausted. We are victims. The only difference between us is the time of death.”

“We are killed one after another. And no one cares about the catastrophe or the crime that we endure in Gaza. No protection for anyone or anything. This gear and helmet do not protect any journalist, they are just empty slogans. We are victims, live on air. We are victims awaiting our turn to be killed,” Al-Bashir ranted while the anchor broke down in tears.

“Mohammad was here half an hour ago. Now he lies dead with his family in this same hospital.”

Just an hour before he was killed, the journalist had produced his latest report from outside the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis.
