People have a right to demonstrate peacefully: UN on farmers’ protest

People have a right to demonstrate peacefully and authorities need to let them do so, Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said while speaking on the farmers’ protests against the Centre’s new farm laws in India, PTI reported.

“As to the question of India, what I would say to you is what I’ve said to others when raising these issues is that people have a right to demonstrate peacefully, and authorities need to let them do so,” Dujarric said.

The demonstrators from Punjab and Haryana continued to protest at the Singhu and Tikri borders on the tenth consecutive day, with the protestors threatening to block all five entry points to the national capital.

The protesting farm union leaders and government will meet for the fifth round of talks on Saturday to bring a solution to the deadlock over the new legislation.
