Kerala: DYFI hoists tricolour after BJP unfurled murder cry ‘Jai Shree Ram’ banner on govt office

Workers of CPI(M)’s youth wing Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) hoisted Indian flag in Palakkad Municipality office in Kerala after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers unfurled the banner of ‘Jai Shree Ram’ – a Hindu chant that became a murder cry- on government building.

On Wednesday, amid the thundering sloganeering and chants of ‘Jai Shree Ram’ and ‘Vande Mataram’, BJP workers climbed atop the municipal building and unfurled two giant flex banners. One read ‘Jai Sriram’ and the other had pictures of Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah with the slogan ‘Vande Mataram’ painted on it. The banners were unfurled after the saffron party won the municipality in recent local body polls.

Two days later, DYFI unfurled the Tricolour on top of the same building, protesting saffron party’s communal agenda.

“Death to Communalism, Long Live Secularism, Death to RSS,” slogans were chanted by left party workers today while marching towards Palakkad Municipality office.

The ruling CPIM led LDF and opposition Congress led UDF terming BJP workers’ move as an “illegal act” and said that “the The flex sheets exhibited communal content.”

The police filed a case against “identifiable people” late Thursday night after the Palakkad Municipal Secretary filed a complaint against BJP workers. “We have filed an FIR under 153 IPC based on the complaint of the Municipal Secretary, who is also a government official,” Palakkad Police Chief Sujithdas S said. Section 153 pertains to provocation with the intent to cause a riot.
