“No alliance with NDA or INDIA,” says Janata Dal (Secular) head HD Deve Gowda

Janata Dal (Secular) supremo HD Deve Gowda insisted Tuesday his party will not join the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance ahead of 2024 General Elections.

Deve Gowda, former Prime Minister, said the JDS will fight the 2024 poll independently.

“JD(S) will fight the Lok Sabha elections independently,” Deve Gowda told a news conference.

“Whether we (the party) win five, six, three, two or one seats, we will fight the Lok Sabha elections independently”, he said. “We will field candidates only in those places where we are strong after consulting with our workers”.

The JDS veteran’s comments today seem contradict those by his son, ex-chief minister HD Kumaraswamy, last week.

On Friday Kumaraswamy and BJP leader Basavaraj Bommai, the ex-chief minister, declared their two parties would ‘work together’ to reign in the Congress government.

The JDS was not part of the 26 opposition parties that met in Bengaluru this month. The opposition parties have banded together under the INDIA umbrella to challenge prime minister Narendra Modi and his Hindu nationalist government in the 2024 election.
