Adivasi student protests at EFLU Hyderabad for hostel accommodation: Adm denies requests despite vacant rooms

In a recent turn of events, an Adivasi student is protesting in front of the administrative building of English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) Hyderabad demanding hostel accommodation.

Porika Vikas is pursuing BA Italian (H) at EFLU Hyderabad and is doing his second degree from EFLU. Since his first year was entirely online, he was not able to perform well due to the digital divide that exists in the nation. Therefore, he joined for his second degree. However, the administration is reluctant to allot rooms to Vikas.

Despite the fact that there are many vacant rooms in the Basheer Men’s Hostel, the administration has simply rejected his requests, citing some age-old rules, he said to Maktoob.

Vikas and his friends have attempted multiple times to meet with the registrar regarding this issue, but their requests have been denied.

Being a tribal student who lives in a far village, 200km from the campus, it’s not possible for Vikas to come to campus every day from his home. Additionally, he is not financially capable of finding accommodation outside the university.

Expressing his dissatisfaction, Vikas said, “This is clear injustice. I have given multiple petitions to the admin regarding this issue. I submitted my first petition on 2nd of January. But there was no response. Then I submitted another letter on 6th February. It has been two weeks now. But still there’s no response from the admin. That’s why I decided to go with protest.”

“If the administration and government is honest with their claims of inclusiveness and tribal rights, they should consider my application,” he said to Maktoob.

Fraternity Movement EFLU unit said they stand in solidarity with Vikas.

“It’s worth noting that the Union government has stated that their new education policy aims to include people from historically marginalized communities. However, here in a central university, a tribal student is not able to continue his studies due to the reluctance from the part of university administration. The university administration and the government need to take Vikas’s situation seriously and take appropriate action,” a student said.
