”Are you a Muslim?”: Student beaten up, abused with ‘love jihad’ slurs on Savitribai Phule university campus

A 19-year-old Muslim student at Savitribai Phule Pune University was beaten on campus by Hindutva men who accused him of “love jihad” and threatened to kill him.

The police filed a case under bailable provisions of the Indian Penal Code but didn’t make any arrests.

The first-year student, walking with friends, was stopped by six men on motorcycles who asked for their Aadhaar cards.

“Are you a Muslim? Have you come here to do love jihad?” one man asked, reported Indian Express.

“After going through our cards, they started accusing me of spreading love jihad and beat me up and slapped my friend. They did not harm the girls but cautioned them against speaking with me,” the student told Times of India.

The Hindutva men then called more people, who also abused and threatened the Muslim student. They even called his father and threatened him.

“They told him that if they did not cancel my admission then they would send back my dead body to our village,” the student said.

The student’s family immediately went to Pune after receiving the call, informed the university, and then went to the police station.

The case was filed under provisions of the Indian Penal Code pertaining to causing hurt, unlawful assembly, rioting, insult, and criminal intimidation.

“We have registered an FIR based on the complaint filed by the 19-year-old student who is a university student. He has not been able to identify the suspects by name. We have launched a probe,” said Inspector Ajay Kulkarni.
