At least two men were shot dead and 11 others wounded in police firings, reported from across Assam Thursday as protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill spilled over to a second day.

Two railway stations and a government office vandalised, the houses of two BJP MLAs attacked, and street clashes between protesters and security forces reported in the state.

Thousands protested in Assam against the Bill saying it will open the gates to large numbers of migrants from neighbouring Bangladesh.

Extra troops were deployed and mobile internet was cut in 10 districts, the government sources said.

Five columns of the army — each comprising 70 personnel — have been deployed in the state — in Guwahati, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh and Jorhat districts.

“This is a spontaneous public outburst,” said Nehal Jain, a masters student in communications in Guwahati told Reuters. “First they tell us there are too many illegal immigrants and we need to get rid of them. Then they bring in this law that would allow citizenship to immigrants.”
