Bihar Caste Survey out: 27% Backward Classes, 36% Extremely Backward Classes

The Bihar government on Monday released data from a state-wide caste-based survey, revealing that the Other Backward Classes and the Extremely Backward Classes constitute over 63% of the state’s population.

Vivek Kumar Singh, the Additional Chief Secretary of Bihar, shared the following statistics: The Backward Classes in Bihar constitute 27.13 percent, the Extremely Backward Classes is at 36.01 percent, and the General category accounts for 15.52 percent.

The survey report also indicated that 19 per cent are from Scheduled Castes. Scheduled Tribes make up 1.68%.

Bhumihars constitute 2.86% of the population, Brahmins 3.66%, Kurmis 2.87%, Musahars 3%, and Yadavas 14%.

The total population of Bihar exceeds 13 crores.

Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar lauded the publication of the survey’s findings. “Caste-based census not only revealed the castes but also gave information about the economic condition of everyone,” Kumar said on social media on Monday. “On this basis, further action will be taken for the development and upliftment of all sections.”
