Daughter of jailed PFI former chairman OMA Salam dies in accident in Kerala

Fathima Thazkiya, the 24-year-old daughter of jailed Muslim leader and former chairman of the Popular Front of India (PFI), OMA Salam, tragically died in an accident early Thursday morning in Kerala’s Wayanad district.

Thazkiya, MBBS student at Government Medical College, Kozhikode, lost her life when her scooter veered off the road in Kalpetta as she was returning from a medical health club meeting.

OMA Salam, along with other senior PFI leaders, was arrested on September 22, 2022, by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) under the draconian Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). This marked the NIA’s first nationwide operation against the PFI, resulting in the leaders being held in detention since their arrest.

Thazkiya’s body has been taken to Kalpetta Fatima Hospital.

Another student, named Ajmiya, who was involved in the accident, has been admitted to Kozhikode Medical College and is reported to have sustained serious injuries.

Sources say Salam, who is incarcerated in Tihar, may apply for interim bail to attend his elder daughter’s funeral.
