Delhi police detains Jamia Nagar residents, students commemorating Dec 15 Jamia violence

Students of Jamia Millia Islamia and residents of Jamia Nagar who were commemorating one year of police crackdown on Jamia students, in Batla House, were detained by the Delhi Police on Tuesday evening.

The detainees include activist Umar Khalid’s mother and sister.

The students and locals were taking out a candle vigil remembering the 15 December attack on Jamia Millia Islamia.

According to the sources, Delhi police have withheld the location of the detainees and their mobile phones are switched off.

“We were not taken to any specific place. We were in the bus the whole time,” one of the detained student told Maktoob after release on 9 pm.

10 men and four women, including Umar Khalid’s mother and sister are brought back to Batla House after four hours of detention.

On 15 December 2019, students of Jamia Millia Islamia held protests against the CAA for the third consecutive day and on the same day, the students had conducted peaceful protests within the university premises. Yet, the Delhi Police forced their way into campus and attacked the protesting students with brute force, using lathis and tear gas.

Numerous accounts revealed that the police personnel hit every student they could find, even in places such as the library, the mosque, the canteen, and the bathrooms.
