Discrimination on the basis of faith is part of racism too: Irfan Pathan

Racism is not just restricted to the skin colour and one could also be racially abused on the basis of his religion, former India pacer Irfan Pathan on Tuesday tweeted following the global debate around racism.

“Racism is not restricted to the colour of the skin. Not allowing to buy a home in a society just because u have a different faith is a part of racism too,” Pathan wrote on Twitter.

When asked by PTI if he wrote out of his personal experience or it was something he observed, Pathan responded: “It is an observation and I don’t think anyone can deny this.”

Many Indian cities including financial capital Mumbai are notorious for its “not for Muslims” high-rise apartment buildings, which in effect means only upper-caste Hindus, or members of the affluent non-Muslim family, can live there, while Muslim families are kept out.

Muslims face extreme difficulties trying to rent a flat in the national capital Delhi also.

The killing of African-American George Floyd in Minneapolis in the United States by White policeman last month triggered mass protests around the globe against racism and white supremacy.
