Rajasthan police has booked five Hindu men under charges including IPC 153 – A (promoting enmity on grounds of religion) for attacking a Muslim family on Tuesday.
The police action came after a video of a Muslim nomad family being brutally kicked and told to go to Pakistan by the Hindu men, went viral on social media.
The latest episode of anti-Muslim violence happened in Chandra Vardai nagar in Rajasthan’s Ajmer on Friday.
“Go to Pakistan. You will get alms there. You won’t get anything here,” an assailant says as he slaps the Muslim man and his two children, a boy and a girl.
The accused have been booked under Section 153 – A (promoting enmity on grounds of religion), 295 A (deliberate, malicious intention of outraging religious beliefs), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 341 (wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code.
The five men are Lalit Sharma, 40; Surendra, 32; Tejpal, 27; Rohit Sharma, 32; and Shailendra Tank, 31.
The five accused were earlier arrested under Section 151 CrPC (arrest to prevent the commission of cognizable offences). The police had taken five people into preventive custody. A day after, all were released.
“It was learnt that the people who were beaten up belonged to UP. They did not lodge any FIR. It was also learnt that Lalit Sharma and a few of his associates had committed the assault. Subsequently, five people including Lalit Sharma were arrested under IPC section 151,” the Ajmer police said in a statement on Monday.
Following criticisms against police’s soft actions, the accused have been charged under four new sections of the IPC, which include non-bailable and non-compoundable offences.
They are expected to be arrested again.
Cops said they could not trace the survivors of the hate crime.
“Many pilgrims across the country come to Ajmer Dargah and it appears the victim could be from Uttar Pradesh,” officials said.
