Former Aligarh Muslim University VC Tariq Mansoor becomes BJP vice president

In preparation for the general election next year, Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday appointed former Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) vice-chancellor Tariq Mansoor as one of its vice presidents. Mansoor, now a BJP MLC in Uttar Pradesh, has been given the key post as part of the party’s overtures to Pasmanda Muslims ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Mansoor resigned as AMU vice-chancellor earlier this year after he was nominated as a member of the UP Legislative Council. He was amongst the six names forwarded by the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh to the governor for being nominated as member of the legislative council of the state.

During his time as a vice chancellor at AMU, Mansoor faced strong criticism and several protests from the students of the university for endorsing Hindu nationalist politics and silencing critical discussions on the campus.

He was the VC when police broke into the AMU campus on December 15, 2019, and assaulted students. He forcefully dispersed the peaceful protest against CAA- NRC-NPR by the students of the university by allowing the Police to enter the campus.

It was in his reign as the VC, for the first time a working IPS officer was appointed the Registrar of a university.
