Former Kerala Chief Minister and veteran Congress leader Oommen Chandy passed away after a prolonged illness on Tuesday morning. He was 79 and had been under treatment for throat cancer for some time.
Chandy’s son shared the news on Facebook at around 5 am. Condolences are pouring in from public figures since morning.
Chandy served as Kerala’s Chief Minister from 2004 to 2006 and 2011 to 2016. He also served as a minister under K Karunakaran and A K Antony. He has been serving as MLA in a row since 1970 representing his home town Puthupally in Kottayam district.
He won the Assembly elections 12 times in a row.
