Kerala dowry death: 10-year jail for dismissed govt staffer for driving wife to kill self

A Kerala court on Tuesday sentenced a dismissed state government employee Kiran Kumar to 25-year (concurrent) rigorous imprisonment and fined him Rs 12.55 lakh for driving his wife Vismaya to die by suicide last year by harassing her over dowry.

Kollam additional sessions court Judge K N Sujith had on Monday found S Kiran Kumar, who was an assistant motor vehicle inspector with the state Motor Vehicle Department, guilty of the dowry death of his wife, Vismaya V Nair, an Ayurvedic medical student.

The accused will undergo imprisonment for ten years for committing the offences under 304 (B) of IPC for dowry death while he will have to serve a term of 6 years under 306 (abetment to suicide) and pay a fine of ₹2 lakh. The default of payment will lead to imprisonment for six months. Under 498 (A) (matrimonial cruelty for dowry) he was given a sentence of 2 years and a fine of ₹50,000 and default of payment will lead to imprisonment for three months.

Vismaya’s father Thrivikram said he is satisfied with the verdict that will send a strong message to the society. But he also said that more persons other than Kiran Kumar are involved in the case and they will try their best to bring them before the law.

Meanwhile, Kiran’s father Sadasivan Pillai said the family will challenge the verdict.
