A young doctor at a government medical college died by suicide after another doctor from the same institute, with whom she had made plans for marriage, backed out because her family could not meet his exorbitant dowry demands.

A Kerala court on Tuesday sentenced a dismissed state government employee Kiran Kumar to 25-year (concurrent) rigorous imprisonment and fined him Rs 12.55 lakh for driving his wife Vismaya to die by suicide last year by harassing her over dowry.

The Social Reform Committee of All India Muslim Personal Law Board on Sunday has launched a campaign to "make marriages simple, easy and prevent unnecessary ceremonies and customs, especially demands of dowry, oppression on daughters and daughters-in-law."

There has been an alarming increase in the number of dowry deaths in the past few years. In 2015, 7,634 cases were reported and from about 19 per day in 2001 to 21 per day in 2016 are reported cases of dowry death by NCB data.
