Kiren Rijiju was removed as Union Law Minister today and replaced by Arjun Ram Meghwal in a stunning move.
Mr Rijiju, known to be one of the government’s most high-profile ministers, has been moved to the relatively low-key Ministry of Earth Sciences.
Arjun Ram Meghwal has been assigned the independent charge as minister of state in the ministry of law and justice in addition to his existing portfolios in place of Rijiju.
This comes days after Rijiju took an openly confrontational approach towards the judiciary. He repeatedly termed the collegium system of appointing judges “opaque”, “alien to the Constitution” and the “only system in the world where judges appoint people known to them”.
Rijiju posted a note for his former ministry, thanking Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, and all judges. M
