Siddaramaiah to be Karnataka Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar Deputy

The Congress on Thursday ended the impasse over the Karnataka government formation and is set to appoint Siddaramaiah the Chief Minister and D K Shivakumar the Deputy CM.

The swearing-in ceremony is likely to be held in Bengaluru on Saturday.

Siddaramaiah will be elected as the Congress Legislative Party leader and cabinet formation discussions are almost complete, news agencies said, adding Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge worked through the night to find a solution.

Earlier in the day, Siddaramiah and Shivakumar, both contenders for the CM post, held separate meetings with party leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday. Shivakumar also had a lunch meeting with Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge.

The Congress Legislative Party (CLP) meeting has been called in Bengaluru on Thursday at 7 pm, reported ANI news agency.

The Congress won 135 of the 224 seats in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, securing 43 percent votes, 5 percent more than in the previous 2018 election, and 7 percent more than the BJP this time. The BJP, which had won 104 seats in 2018, had to settle for 66 this time. The Janata Dal (Secular), or JD-S, the third major party in the state, got 19 seats.
