Kuki women paraded naked by Meitei mob in Manipur: CBI chargesheet against 6, juvenile

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a charge sheet on Monday in a Guwahati special court, implicating six individuals and a juvenile in connection with a 2023 May incident in which two women from Manipur’s Kuki-Zomi community were paraded naked and sexually assaulted by a Meitei mob.

In July, a viral video that sparked nationwide outrage depicted two women, one in her 20s and the other in her 40s, being compelled to walk naked along a road and towards a field by a Meitei mob, with some men seen assaulting them.

In a police complaint filed on May 18, the women had also alleged that the younger woman was “brutally gangraped in the broad daylight.”

After the massive outrage against BJP led Union and State governments, the CBI initiated a case at the behest of the Manipur government, following additional directives from the Union government.

The accused have been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those pertaining to gangrape, murder, outraging the modesty of a woman and criminal conspiracy, the CBI said.

“It was alleged that, on May 4, a mob of approximately 900-1,000 individuals, armed with sophisticated weapons, entered B Phainom village in the Kangpokpi district of Manipur, vandalised and set houses ablaze, looted properties, assaulted villagers, committed murders, sexually assaulted women. It was further alleged that two family members of one of the victims were also killed in the incident,” a spokesperson of the CBI said.

“The public is reminded that the above findings are based on the investigation done by CBI and evidence collected by it. Under the Indian Law, the accused are presumed to be innocent till their guilt is finally established after a fair trial,” the CBI spokesperson added.
