Nitish Kumar resigns as Bihar CM, to form govt with BJP’s support soon

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar submitted his resignation to Governor Rajendra Arlekar on Sunday morning. Kumar is expected to stake claim to form the government with the BJP after severing ties with the RJD.

Speaking to reporters outside the Raj Bhavan, Nitish said that a new alliance will be formed. He added that things were “not working out” in the Opposition’s INDIA alliance and he decided to resign because things were not good.

The swearing-in ceremony will take place at 4 pm on Sunday. Earlier in the day, Nitish Kumar met JD(U) MLAs, while the BJP, too, called a meeting of all its MLAs and MPs.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Nitish to congratulate him.

In the current 243-member Bihar Assembly, Nitish Kumar-led JD(U) has 45 MLAs and the BJP 78, taking the combine’s tally to 123. With one more Independent expected to support them, the alliance will cross the 122-member majority mark.
