Railways sends evacuation notices to Delhi’s two historic mosques

The Indian Railways has issued evacuation notices to Delhi’s two prominent mosques—Bengali Market Mosque and Babar Shah Takiya Mosque, alleging that the structures were built on their land without permission.

“If the encroachments are not removed within the stipulated timeframe, they will take necessary action to reclaim their land,” read notice by Northern Railway administration which demanded the removal of ‘encroachments’ within 15 days.

The railway administration has stated “their land has been illegally encroached upon, and they are urging the concerned parties to voluntarily remove any unauthorized buildings, temples, mosques, or shrines constructed on their property. Failure to comply with the notice will lead to action taken by the railway administration, in accordance with the Railway Act, to reclaim the encroached land,” Outlook reported.

The Babar Shah Takiya Mosque’s is nearly 400 years old, Abdul Gaffar, the mosque secretary said to India Today.

The adjacent office of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for Malaria has also been served a notice by the railway authorities, demanding the evacuation of the premises.
