Trans student’s year long fight wins as she gets hostel room in Panjab university

Yashika is currently pursuing a master’s degree at Panjab University’s Centre for Human Rights and Duties.

Panjab University (PU) will provide free of cost accommodation to a transwoman student at the working women’s hostel, dean students’ welfare (DSW) Jagtar Singh informed to chairman of transgender welfare board-cum-additional deputy commisioner, UT administration.

This comes after the transwoman student Yashika’s year long fight for basic rights and justice. Yashika has been demanding a hostel room since October last year.

Yashika is currently pursuing a master’s degree at Panjab University’s Centre for Human Rights and Duties.

Yashika was on the merit list of students eligible for a hostel room, but was not allocated one in the absence of a policy regarding hostel allotment for transgender students.

Yashika who had lodged a protest at the varsity earlier this year, approached the Punjab and Haryana high court. Yashika, through her counsel Advocate Maninderjit Singh, had contended that hostel accommodation has not been made available to her, even, after admission has been granted in the MA course.

Yashika had been temporarily accommodated at the faculty guest house on campus.

“It was the long struggle for seeking recognition as trans student in hostels, After long protests university temporary accommodate faculty guest house which was still kind of exclusion but this time I get justice to get working woman hostel,“ Yashika said to Maktoob.

“Fight will continue till university doesn’t introduce proper inclusive policy for the LGBTIQ+ students within the university to make safe space for them,” added Yashika.
