UP: Four student activists sent to jail for anti-CAA protest, CPIML demands “immediate release”

The Uttar Pradesh police arrested four activists affiliated with leftist group All India Students’ Association (AISA) for organising a protest on 13 March against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019 outside the gate of the University of Allahabad.

AISA UP Vice President Manish Kumar, Revolutionary Youth Association (RYA) UP Joint Secretary Sonu Yadav, Allahabad University AISA Vice President Bhanu Kumar and Joint Secretary Alok Ambedkar are sent to Naini Jail in Prayagraj, formerly known as Allahabad.

They were booked under various sections of CrPC including 151 (Arrest to prevent the commission of cognisable offence), 107 (Security for keeping the peace in other cases) and 116(3), national joint secretary of AISA, Shivam, told Maktoob

AISA activists organised this protest along with the students of the university. Shortly after the demonstration, on the evening of 13 March, Uttar Pradesh police arrested Bhanu Kumar and Alok Ambedkar.

According to the student group, Manish and Sonu were arrested on 15 March, in front of the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) office in Prayagraj, where they had gone to provide legal assistance to the jailed activists. All four are now sent to Naini Jail.

AISA Leaders claimed that Manish neither participated in the protest nor was present in Prayagraj on the day of the demonstration against CAA. They alleged that Uttar Pradesh Police arrested him because of his previous participation in protests against RO/ARO and UP Police Paper leak. Manish was also been detained by the protests related to the RO/ARO Paper Leak.

“UP Police must Immediately Release AISA & RYA Comrade Manish, Sonu, Alok and Bhanu! No to Police Repression and Bulldozer Raj,” Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation demanded in a statement posted on social media.
