Very severe cyclonic storm ‘Biparjoy’ to intensify during next 48 hours, IMD issues warning

The very severe cyclonic storm Biparjoy will intensify further and move north-northwestwards, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday.

“VSCS BIPARJOY over east-central Arabian Sea, lay centred at 0530hrs IST of 08th June, near lat 13.9N & long 66.0E, about 860km west-southwest of Goa, 910km southwest of Mumbai, would intensify further & move north-northwestwards,” read the notice by the weather department.

The IMD earlier said that the fshermen have been advised not to venture into such cyclone-hit areas in the Arabian Sea and those who are out at sea are advised to return to the coast.

The cyclone will affect monsoon onset over Kerala and weak progress beyond the southern peninsula under its influence. The cyclone will also affect states like Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Kerala as they will experience high-speed wind.

However, the IMD has not yet predicted any major impact on countries adjoining the Arabian Sea, including India, Oman, Iran, and Pakistan.

IMD has also issued a rainfall alert in Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh for the next five days.

Light/moderate fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorm/lightning/gusty winds very likely over Kerala, Lakshadweep, South Interior Karnataka; isolated to scattered activity over Coastal & North Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh during the next 5 days.

Light or moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning will be experienced in northeastern India for the next five days. Isolated heavy rainfall is very likely over Assam & Meghalaya on 10th June.
